1018 rectangular bars have ~0.18% C (tensile ~440 MPa, yield ~275 MPa); 1045 ~0.45% C (tensile ~640 MPa, yield ~410 MPa); 4140 adds ~1% Cr, 0.25% Mo (tensile ~775 MPa, yield ~620 MPa). These bars have elongation of 12–20% and can be hardened by heat-treating (4140) to hardness ~30–35 HRC. Cold-rolled forms provide tight dimension control, good surface finish, and straightness. They can be successfully welded and machined. Mechanical and structural bars are stable under load and, therefore, can be used for general engineering purposes.
