What is Kovar Bar and Rod?

Kovar typically consists of 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, 0.3% manganese, and the balance is iron. The coefficient of thermal expansion is approximately 5.5 µm/m·°C (20 to 400°C). The tensile strength ranges from 520 to 620 MPa; yield strength is around 415 MPa; and elongation is about 20%. Kovar shows excellent stability under thermal cycling and minimal distortion. It is magnetic and can be easily brazed or welded. Its expansion characteristics closely match borosilicate glass, allowing for strong seals.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Kovar rods, primarily composed of iron, cobalt, and nickel, are resistant to galvanic corrosion due to their similar electrochemical properties with most alloys, reducing the risk when paired with compatible materials.

Yes, Kovar bar can be welded, but it requires special techniques and precautions due to its unique composition and thermal expansion properties. Proper heat control and filler metals are essential.

Kovar rods typically come in diameters ranging from 1/8" to 4" and lengths of up to 12 feet. Finishes include mill, polished, and brushed surfaces for various applications.

Kovar Bar and Rod Uses

Kovar Bars and Rods are mainly used for sealing electronic packages, vacuum tubes, cathode ray tubes, and transistor components. Aerospace and defense industries use Kovar for infrared sensors, satellite parts, and instrumentation packages. In telecommunications, it is used in hermetic packaging, oscillators, and laser housings. Its thermal compatibility with glass and ceramics ensures structural integrity in harsh temperature environments. Dhruv Metals provides Kovar rods that meet critical tolerances for advanced electronic systems.
